The Benefits of a Bucket List

The Benefits of a Bucket List Stress Management Management Techniques Print The Benefits of a Bucket List By Elizabeth Scott, MS twitter Elizabeth Scott, MS, is a wellness coach specializing in stress management and quality of life, and the author of 8 Keys to Stress Management. Traditional vacations bring important benefits for stress management and life satisfaction, but for those who can’t spare the time or expense for a week-long trip, staycations are a viable alternative. Fitting more hobbies and fun into your lifestyle can bring a significant payoff as well (see these ideas for having more fun in your life). One fun and effective strategy for ensuring that you take the time you need for the more fun things in life (as well as some important goals you may have) is to create a bucket listâ€"or several. The idea behind a bucket list is, as they state in the movie with the same title, to create a list of things you hope to do before you kick the bucket, but you can also use the idea for any deadlineâ€"say, a list of things you wish to do before you enter your next decade of life, or before the summer ends. Creating a bucket list can benefit you in several ways. Getting in Touch With Your Values When you make a list of all the things you’d like to do, this activity may be a springboard to becoming more aware of what’s really important to you. When you start thinking about what you really want to do, you can find perspective on how you are currently spending your time, and on what you’d like to be doing, so the tie and energy for things that really matter to you aren’t eaten up by the time you put into the things that matter less. Making a bucket list can help you remember what you value the most. Remembering Your Goals When we feel we have lots of time ahead of usâ€"a new summer, a new year, a whole lifetimeâ€"we may think about what we’d like to do with it. Then, “real life” takes over, and we may focus more on our day-to-day goals and less on our goals for fun, excitement, stress relief, or on our long-term goals. Creating a bucket list can keep us in touch with these goals we have and can help us keep track of them as we plan them into our lives and check them off upon completion. Getting Creative Nothing gets creative juices flowing like a good brainstorming session. Creating a bucket list can help you tap into the creative part of you that dreams bigger, nurtures your inner child, and makes life more worthwhile. Once you’ve put your creative side into play by creating the bucket list, your everyday self can stay inspired to put those dreams and plans into action. Enjoying Life Simply creating the list can be fun. Sharing your list with others, revisiting your list over time, and checking off your experiences as you collect them, can all be ways to enjoy life more, and share the fun. Keeping Track of Peak Experiences Creating a bucket list can be inspirational. While you may not complete every item on your list, you will likely complete some, and get more out of your life than if you hadn’t created the list. These are the experiences you may remember the most in life, that may change who you are in a positive way. However you use your bucket lists, they can be a positive experience that can be utilized to fit your needs. Creating a bucket list can also relieve stress and enhance your life.

The Myth Of The Apollo 11 Land On The Moon And Hearing...

It has been forty-seven years since families across America were in awe watching the Apollo 11 land on the moon and hearing Neil Armstrong famously say â€Å"That s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind†. It has also been forty-seven years of people doubting the legitimacy of this footage. The theorists versus the realists is a never ending debate over whether this was a staged government hoax or if America actually made it to space. With hundreds of theories circulating involving Stanley Kubrick, Area 51, and the validity of a wrinkle in a flag. Was America really that eager to beat the Soviets and win the Space Race or did we just hit the jackpot in scientific discovery? During John F. Kennedy’s time as president he vowed to get to the moon before the end of the decade. Even though he did not live to see it, those next ten years there was a sprint between American and the Soviet Union to see who could get to the moon first. The space race â€Å"showed the world which country had the best science, technology, and economic system† (Ducksters). America failed many times but we finally made it in 1969. Or did we? Post World War II America was very sensitive about their reputation and had lots of confidence being one of the top countries in the world. Americans could not handle the pressure of losing. So Americans did what they do best. Fake it. When this race began â€Å"NASA’s budget was increased almost 500 percent, and the lunar landing program eventually involved some

Response Essay Free Essays

Response Essay In reading the three articles, â€Å"From Degrading to De-Grading† by Alfie Kohn, â€Å"And Now He is Nothing† by Michael Specter and â€Å"Dilma Rousseff† by Simon Romero my impressions of each article varies from one of unbelief to affirmation. As compelling as the ideology of not grading is, the practicality of implementation would be enormous. The assumption that Lance Armstrong is now nothing can it really be so easily dismissed? Finally, Dilma Rousseff rise to power as a right of previous wrongs remains to be seen; each writer conveying a very persuasive argument. We will write a custom essay sample on Response Essay or any similar topic only for you Order Now I embrace Alfie Kohn’s ideology that by grading a student’s work one actually hinders the process of learning. Having three school-aged children myself, I see the effect grades have on their mindset. If they do not achieve an â€Å"A† they feel less than their peers. I also have seen instances where they will pick the easiest assignment or not bother to complete extra credit assignments for grading. Therefore, in this regard I do agree that grading does play a factor in their learning experience. However, the practicality of overcoming the mindset of a nation of people is a daunting task that may very well take years to persuade. As much as I may agree with Mr. Kohn’s ideology, I do not see this becoming mainstreamed within the educational system any time in the near future. His ideology would have to be fully embraced by the educational system for steps of improvement in grading students to take hold. This may very well take a grass roots effort from the parents and citizens themselves before ideology could be changed, which would take much time in educating the public on this subject. As much as I personally would love to see this type of learning be prevalent within our educational system I do not see it happening in my lifetime. One can only hope. Such as the case with Lance Armstrong, our hopes in him as a nation were dashed with the admission of doping. As with many of our athletes, it is always a disappointment when news of their achievement is eroded by one form of cheating or another. His achievements are outstanding and his passion and dedication for bicycling is inspiring, especially having overcome the dread of cancer. We are always looking to others to motivate us, or inspire us to do more than we think we are capable of doing, which is what makes his admission so painful. I agree that I was shocked by the news, but is the punishment truly warranted; to remove all seven of his Tour de France victories? I don’t believe it is warranted, neither can it be proven as he had been tested numerous times over the years and never tested positive. An admission alone is not proof enough and should not warrant such an ardent punishment. Although I agree with the writer’s disappointment I do not agree with striping him of all his wins. People are not always what you think they are. As with Dilma Rousseff, the darling of the Brazilian government, her rags to riches story is compelling. While I applaud Ms. Rousseff’s accomplishments, it remains to be seen if she in fact will be the savior of her country or the start of its demise. Her ideology that government can fix all the economic problems by stimulating the economy with stimulus packages in my opinion is just a temporary fix. Just as we have seen in our own country with the bank bailouts and the loans to the automotive corporations has only delayed the effects of a slumped economy. The promise that better days are ahead remains exactly that, somewhere over the horizon. Do I feel that it is wrong for the government to stimulate the economy, no, but neither do I believe that the government is our savior. This world’s economy is such a delicate balancing act that anything outside of your own four walls can ultimately be your downfall. Each article evokes a different response from the wish of a complete overhaul of our educational system, to our hopes dashed by choices made by one of our star athletes, to skepticism of big brother being our fix all. As much as I agree with the ideology of De-Grading the implementation would be difficult at best. Armstrong’s rise to fame and demise is one that will be remembered for years by those for and against the ruling levied against him. Finally, everyone loves the underdog such as the case with Ms. Rousseff but it remains to be seen if her ideology of government intervention is truly the best approach for Brazil’s economic future. In conclusion, I would more than likely read more articles written by these writers because of their ability to persuade and keep the attention of the reader. Marijuana Detailed Research Essays - Biofuels, Hemp, Herbs, Cannabis

Marijuana Detailed Research MARIJUANA HORTICULTURE: Growing and Cultivating the Weed * alt.hemp: from the newsgroup of the same name * Bongs and Pipes: bongs, pipes, etc * Gravity Bongs: gravity bongs * Growlights: for marijuana * Marijuana Consumption: more stuff on bongs, pipes, eating, etc * Marijuana Eating: p.o. consumption of marijuana (butter, brownies, etc...) * Marijuana Law: state laws Marijuana is a deciduous plant which grows from seeds. The fibrous sectionof the plant was once used to make rope. The flowering tops, leaves, seeds, and resin of the plant isused by just about everyone to get HIGH. Normally, the vegetable parts of the plant are smoked to produce thishigh, but thay can also be eaten. The axtive ingredient in marijuanaresin is THC (tetahydrocannabinol). Marijuana contains from 1 - 4 percent THC (4 per cent must be considered GOOD dope). Marijuana grows wild in many parts of the world, and is cultivated inMexice, Vietnam, Africa, Nepal, India, South America, etc.,etc. Themarijuana sold in the United States comes primarily from, yes, theUniited States. It is estimated that at least 50 per cent of the grass on the streetsin America is homegrown. The next largest bunch comes actoss theborders from Mexico, with smaller amounts filtering in from Panama, occasionally South America, and occasinally, Africa. Hashish is the pure resin of the marijuana plant, which is scraped fromthe flowering tops of the plant and lumped together. Ganja is theground-up tops of the finest plants. (It is also the name given to anysort of marijuana in Jamaica.) Marijuana will deteriorate in about two years if exposed to light, air or heat. It should always be stored in cool places. Grass prices in the United States are a direct reflection of the lawsof supply and demand (and you thought that high school economicswould never be useful). A series of large border busts, a short growingseason, a bad crop, any number of things can drive the price of marijuanaup. Demand still seems to be on the increase in the U.S., so prices seldomfall below last year's level. Each year a small seasonal drought occurs, as last year's supply runslow, and next year's crop is not up yet. Prices usually rase about20 - 75 per cent during this time and then fall back to normal.Unquestionably, a large shortage of grass causes a percentage of smokersto turn to harder drugs instead. For this reason, no grass controlprogram can ever be beneficial or successful. GROWING IT! There is one surefire way of avoiding high prices and the grass DT's:Grow your own. This is not as difficult as some authorities on thesubject would make you believe. Marijuana is a weed, and a fairly vivacious one at that, and it will grow almost in spite of you. OUTDOORS Marijuana Grower's Handbook: The Indoor High Yield Guide Contrary to popular belief, grass grows well in many place on theNorth American continent. It will flourish even if the temperature doesnot raise above 75 degrees. The plants do need a minimum of eight hours of sunlight per day andshould be planted in late April/early May, BUT DEFINITELY, after thelast frost of the year. Growing an outdoor, or au naturel, crop has been the favored methodover the years, because grass seems to grow better without as muchattention when in its natural habitat. Of course, an outdoors setting requires special precautions not encoun-tered with an indoors crop; you must be able to avoid detection, both fromlaw enforcement freaks and common freaks, both of whom will take yourweed and probably use it. Of course, one will also arrest you. You mustalso have access to the area to prepare the soil and harvest the crop. There are two schools of thought about starting the seeds. One says youshould start the seedlings for about ten days in an indoor starter box(see the indoor section) and then transplant. The other theory is thatyou should just start them in the correct location. Fewer plants willcome up with this method, but there is no shock of transplant tokill some of the seedlings halfway through. The soil should be preprepared for the little devils by turning itover a couple of times and adding about one cup of hydrated lime persquare yard of soil and a little bit (not too much, now) of good watersoluble nitrogen fertilizer. The soil should now be watered severaltimes and left to sit about one week. The plants should be planted at least three feet apart, getting toogreedy and stacking them too close will result in stunted plants. The plants like some water during their growing season, BUT not toomuch. This is especially true around the roots, as too much water willrot the root system. Grass grows well in corn or hops, and these plants

Instruction Set Essays - IBM PC Compatibles, Computer Enclosure

Instruction Set Essays - IBM PC Compatibles, Computer Enclosure Instruction Set It has become increasingly popular to build one's own computer. In many cases, it saves money, and guarantees that you get what you want. Building your own computer also assures that you avoid the proprietary designs many companies use to utilize to keep the customers coming back for new parts. Most importantly, having built the system, you become very familiar with your system and with computers in general. There is no reason not to tackle the project of building your own computer. A very basic knowledge is required, and you can learn as you go! Materials and Tools Needed Upon having researched the quality of the parts you want to use to build your computer, you will need the following basic items to assemble your processor: Case/Tower Motherboard CPU (central processing unit) Heat sink and fan Floppy drive Hard drive and CD-ROM Video card (optional but very recommended) The accessories needed to put together your processor should come with each of the components purchased. However, the basic screws that will be required are the following: Chassis screws Smaller screws (these are just like the chassis screws, but have a smaller diameter) Standoffs Washers Spacers (snap-in and standard) There are a variety of different tools you may need while building your system. Here are a few of the most common ones: Flat head screwdriver Magnetized Phillips head screwdriver Regular Phillips head screwdriver The entire installation process of the components should take approximately an hour, but this all depends on the level of experience and knowledge of the builder. Precautions and warnings There are a few things that you should be aware of when you are building your computer so you don't hurt yourself or damage any of the components. Wash and dry your hands Make sure you ground yourself by touching an uncoated part of your computer's chassis prior to touching any of the components. It is recommended to wear the anti-static strap. Be careful of sharp edges within your case Only handle PCB's (your motherboard, video card, etc) from the edges whenever possible. Touching the contacts can damage them. Avoid using magnetic screwdrivers when installing your hard drive, since it is a magnetic storage medium. In the following pages, you will find the instruction steps to preparing, installing and testing your new processor Preparation At this point, have the new case in front of you with the cover removed. Before any installation of the components takes place, you must prepare it for use. Go through the following checklist to ensure it is prepared. 1. Clean the case. Clean out the inside with a rag and compressed air to ensure the case is free of dust. 2. Inspect the power supply. Make sure it is set to the proper voltage (110V). 3. Install feet. These are tabs inserted into the holes at the bottom of the case. 4. Install the case fan. Screw the fan onto a rack next to the vent on the front of the case with the accompanying screws. INSTALLATION PROCESS Installing the CPU CAUTION: Installing the CPU is straight forward, but doing this step too fast or carelessly can result in damage to the processor. 5. Install the processor rack into Slot 1 (a PCI slot) of the motherboard, which is a support for the CPU to rest in. 6. Position a rail on each end of the Slot. Use the small screws on each end of the slot to tighten it into place onto the motherboard. 7. Insert the Processor into the Slot. Push the processor into the guide rails and down all the way to the surface of the slot. Installing the Heat Sink Now that the CPU is installed in the motherboard, the installation of the heat sink and fan are required. 8. Attach the fan to the heat sink using the four screws provided with the CPU fan. 9. Apply the heat sink compound to cover surface of the chip. 10. Attach the heat sink on top of the processor, pressing down lightly. 11. Make sure all areas of the chip are in contact with the heat sink. Wipe off any excess of the compound that may have oozed out the sides. Installing the Memory Installing the memory modules, otherwise known as SIMMS or DIMMS are placed in the memory slots of the motherboard. 12. Install the memory module (SIMM

Hemophilia in Queen Victoria’s Descendants

Hemophilia in Queen Victoria’s Descendants Three or four of the children of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert are known to have had the hemophilia gene.  A son, four grandsons, and six or seven great-grandsons and possibly a great-granddaughter were afflicted with hemophilia. Two or three daughters and four granddaughters were carriers who passed the gene to the next generation, without themselves being afflicted with the disorder. How Inheriting Hemophilia Work Hemophilia  is a chromosome disorder which is located on the sex-linked X chromosome.  The trait is recessive, which means that women, with two X chromosomes, must inherit it from both mother and father for the disorder to appear.  Men, however, have only one X chromosome, inherited from the mother, and the Y chromosome all men inherit from the father does not protect the male child from manifesting the disorder. If a mother is a carrier of the gene (one of her two X chromosomes has the abnormality) and the father is not, as seems to have been the case with Victoria and Albert, their sons have a 50/50 chance of inheriting the gene and being active hemophiliacs, and their daughters have a 50/50 chance of inheriting the gene and being a carrier, also passing it along to half of their children. The gene can also appear spontaneously as a mutation on an X chromosome, without the gene being present in the X chromosomes of either father or mother. Where Did the Hemophilia Gene Come From? Queen Victoria’s mother, Victoria, Duchess of Kent, did not pass a hemophilia gene to her older son from her first marriage, nor did her daughter from that marriage seem to have the gene to pass down to her offspring - the daughter, Feodora, had three sons and three daughters.  Queen Victoria’s father, Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, did not show signs of hemophilia.  There is a small possibility that the Duchess had a lover who had survived to adulthood though afflicted with hemophilia, it would have been highly unlikely that a man with hemophilia would have survived to adulthood at that time in history.  Prince Albert showed no signs of the disease, so he’s unlikely to have been the source of the gene, and not all the daughters of Albert and Victoria seem to have inherited the gene, which would have been true if Albert had the gene. The assumption from the evidence is that the disorder was a spontaneous mutation either in her mother at the time of the queen’s conception, or, more likely, in Queen Victoria. Which of Queen Victoria’s Children Had the Hemophilia Gene? Of Victoria’s four sons, only the youngest inherited hemophilia.  Of Victoria’s five daughters, two definitely were carriers, one was not, one had no children so it is not known whether she had the gene, and one may or may not have been a carrier. Victoria, Princess Royal, German Empress and Queen of Prussia: her sons showed no signs of being afflicted, and none of her daughters’ descendants were, either, so she apparently did not inherit the gene.Edward VII: he was not a hemophiliac, so he did not inherit the gene from his mother.Alice, Grand Duchess of Hesse: she definitely carried the gene and passed it to three of her children.  Her fourth child and only son, Friedrich, was afflicted and died before he was three.  Of her four daughters who lived to adulthood, Elizabeth died childless, Victoria (maternal grandmother of Prince Philip) was apparently not a carrier, and Irene and Alix had sons who were hemophiliacs.  Alix, known later as Empress Alexandra of Russia, passed the gene to her son, the Tsarevitch Alexei, and his affliction influenced the course of Russian history.Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha: he was not a hemophiliac, so he did not inherit the gene from his mother.Princess Helena: she had two sons who died in infancy, which might be attributed to hemophilia, but that is not certain. Her other two sons showed no signs, and her two daughters did not have children. Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll: she had no children, so there is no way to know if she had inherited the gene.Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught: he was not a hemophiliac, so he did not inherit the gene from his mother.Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany: he was a hemophiliac who died after two years of marriage when bleeding could not be stopped after he fell. His daughter Princess Alice was a carrier, passing the gene to her eldest son who died when he bled to death after an automobile accident.  Alice’s younger son died in infancy so may or may not have been afflicted, and her daughter seems to have escaped the gene, as none of her descendants have been afflicted.  Leopold’s son, of course, did not have the disease, as sons do not inherit a father’s X chromosome.Princess Beatrice: like her sister Alice, she definitely carried the gene.  Two or three of her four children had the gene.  Her son Leopold bled to death during a knee operation at 32. Her son Ma urice was killed in action in World War I, and it’s disputed whether hemophilia was the cause. Beatrice’s daughter, Victoria Eugenia, married King Alfonso XIII of Spain, and their two sons both bled to death after car accidents, one at 31, one at 19.  Victoria Eugenia and Alfonso’s daughters have no descendants who’ve shown signs of the condition.
